How Talent Insights Builds Award-Winning Cultures

Every hiring manager knows the pressure of making a good hire. Just one person can
help lift your company to the next level – or cost you dearly. Read the story of how
Talent Insights was born from a desire to build companies by finding the right people
to fit their mission.

It all started with a private equity investor

who couldn’t find what he wanted.

The partners of Momentum Capital knew that the value of the companies in their portfolio was directly affected by the quality and “fit” of the people those companies hired.

For years, they tried every single imaginable approach to assessing candidates: search firms, consultants, psychologists, systems, methodologies and one written assessment tool after another. Nothing seemed to move the needle. The firm worked hard at vetting candidates and “hit” on about 60% of its hires.

Nothing seemed to move the needle. The firm worked hard at vetting candidates and “hit” on about 60% of its hires.

They calculated that every “miss” cost them between 2x and 10x the hire’s annual salary.

Finally, after 20 years of searching,

the managing partner stumbled across a new assessment tool. It was designed to help students pick a degree and career path to pursue and would later become the Talent Insights MAP™.

Adding the MAP™ and structured interview to our process boosted our hiring success rate from 60% to about 75% in a short time. The impact on both economics and morale was big. There are many ways to assess the aptitudes and competencies of a candidate. We didn’t know it at the time, but what we needed, and what the MAP™ provides, is an objective way to evaluate each candidate’s internal wiring                        and the “fit” of their natural motivations for a particular                              position and culture.

Jim Anderson,
Momentum Capital Managing Director

After adapting the assessment to suit the business environment, Jim saw such amazing results in his private equity portfolio that he wanted an even stronger partnership. His firm invested in Qualbe Marketing Group and introduced the MAP™ to Qualbe’s hiring process.

The bottom line? Qualbe liked the MAP™ so much, they decided to create a new company (Talent Insights) to develop and market this innovative tool. Qualbe’s “Why,” or reason for existing, is to “build up businesses and build up people.” What better way to accomplish that goal than by giving other businesses the tools to hire better and manage smarter?

For years, Qualbe has been growing its own business and cultivating others through the powerful information that the Talent Insights MAP™ provides. Qualbe has won many company culture awards both locally and nationally, including Top 10 Company Culture among medium-size businesses from Entrepreneur Magazine. Its culture has accelerated business growth, recently earning the company a spot among the Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Companies.

Building and Maintaining an Award-Winning Culture in a Call Center

Call centers are one of the most notoriously difficult work environments in which to create a healthy culture. Managers often struggle to cultivate a high-performance, high-morale workplace with happy employees and low turnover.

Phone sales is a tough job. A person may be “good with people” and still not enjoy the day-to-day work or produce the results of a top performer.

If you put 4-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady on the offensive line, he’d look terrible. You’d think he wasn’t a great athlete. But if you put him in the right spot, he’s world class. The MAP™ gives you insight that by trial and error might take years to figure out.

Randy Meinen,
Qualbe CEO

Qualbe’s call center is thriving because the MAP gets the right people in place and helps the management team train and motivate more effectively. Since implementing the MAP along with our other culture and business development strategies, our average conversion rate has grown from 36% to 44% across the sales team while maintaining a great morale ranking of 87%.

When we bring in a new person, the MAP enables us to see personality traits and wiring that help us figure out how we can set them up for success – not just with their manager but with other team members.

How the MAP™ Gets the Right People in the Right Spots

Let’s take “George” as an example. George was a hard worker, but he was placed in the wrong spot – in Marketing. He was a very smart guy but would occasionally miss a detail, and in that department, missing what may seem like a small detail could cost the company thousands. In one case, it did.

After many meetings and deciding to have George do a MAP™, Qualbe found that he was just in the wrong spot and actually had an aptitude for sales! Qualbe moved George to sales and he proceeded to become a strong performer in the call center. He made the company exponentially more money than he had cost Qualbe in his mistake.

That’s our goal – to put people in the right job and manage them well. As all hiring managers know, if you help your employee be successful, the company will be successful.

Randy Meinen,
Qualbe CEO

Now Qualbe requires every single employee, regardless of department, to take a MAP assessment before they’re even hired. Through the MAP™, Qualbe has avoided many hiring mistakes, improved management techniques and continued to increase performance standards.
